The city of Long Beach on the Mississippi coast is all set to welcome a new casino. The state’s Gaming Commission approved the location on Wednesday. Mississippi’s Long Beach casino will be the 13th in the state and should help to boost their already flourishing gambling industry.
It’s an exciting moment for residents of the Long Beach area. Hope is high that this casino can help to improve the economy of one of Mississippi’s struggling small cities.
A Plan More than Two Years in the Making
Long Beach has been pushing for a casino for years. The economy here has struggled over the past decade, and some feel a gaming establishment could bring in the kind of revenue necessary to turn things around. This town has some of the highest car taxes in the world, and many residents here are working to keep their head above water.
Local developer John Parrish began formulating a plan to have a casino approved in the city more than two years ago. The Mississippi Gaming Commission met in November to discuss the application.
This Wednesday, the Commission finally approved the set of plans. A casino can soon be built in Long Beach, yet a number of steps must now be taken before construction can begin.
John Parrish will need to prove he can provide the financials for the casino to be completed. That will take some time. It’s an extremely exciting time for this small city desperate for some more money.
“This is the first step of many to come,” said Long Beach Mayor George Bass. “The next step is for the developer to secure financing and to show it’s a viable project, one that will support the Long Beach school system and the city.”
Updates on Online Gambling in Mississippi
Mississippi has not introduced any legislation to regulate and tax their online gambling industry. Certain lawmakers here have worked to introduce regulations over the past five years, yet none have passed.
Fortunately, there are some fantastic online gambling sites in the US that bettors in Mississippi can access. Most of these sites offer a wide range of betting options on everything from sports betting to online casino games.
Mississippi has certainly made some big improvements to their casino industry over the years, but not much progress has been made in regulating internet gaming here. As their land-based gambling industry continues to grow, we may see officials here begin pushing more for online regulation.
State Senator Willie Simmons recently introduced a new bill that would allow for sports betting on mobile devices. Only licensed casinos currently offer legal sports betting in Mississippi.
Will Mississippi’s Long Beach Casino Offer Sports Betting?
Sports betting is legal within casinos inside Mississippi. The law to legalize sports betting passed in 2017. Hopes were high that regulating the sports gambling industry here would help bring in some valuable revenue for the state, yet results have been mixed thus far.
In December of 2018, Mississippi earned just $6,174,223 in revenue from sports betting. A lack of online betting is said to be hurting their chances to earn more revenue.
It’s likely that Mississippi’s Long Beach casino will offer sports betting. As we mentioned earlier, the casino was created with revenue in mind, and sports betting is often a big money-maker for casinos around the country.
